As voters across California head to the polls this Tuesday, San Diegans will cast their ballot for one of the four candidates running in the city's heated mayoral race: City Council Member Carl DeMaio (R), Congressman Bob Filner (D), State Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher (I), and District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis (R).

Wisconsin Governor Republican Scott Walker, was elected in 2010. After his election on a reform agenda to cut government waste, his first major step towards this goal was to sign into law measures to put an end to collective bargaining for most public sector workers in the state.

Meet John Dennis, the 2010 Republican nominee in Rep. Nancy Pelosi's congressional district, and the House Minority Leader's likely general "run-off" election challenger in 2012 after Tuesday's novel top-two open primary. John Dennis is an antiwar Republican who supports gay marriage, legalizing marijuana, ending warrantless wiretaps, and withdrawing the military from Afghanistan and Iraq "as safely and quickly as possible".

For those of us who supported the new Open Primary, the preliminary results are in far sooner than any of us could have expected.

In particular, the unexpected emergence of independent candidates so soon has already advanced the cause of introducing some much-needed intellectual competition into the process.
