New Voting Methods

We very rarely take the time to refute or rebut specific articles that spew disinformation, but we must make an exception for a recent article that wrongfully accuses both election officials and postal workers of bad practice. Real Clear Politics published an op-ed by Mark Hemingway asserting that in the four general elections from 2012-2018, 28 million mailed-out ballots went "missing."

But it is not true.

Attacks have been made from both the right and the left about the viability of vote at home systems and their potential to advantage one party over the other. In the midst of a global pandemic that continues to threaten our democratic processes, there is an immediate need to assuage these concerns.

Richie is president and Daley a senior fellow at FairVote, a nonpartisan electoral reform group that promotes ranked-choice voting. This month Daley published "Unrigged: How Americans Are Battling Back to Save Democracy" (Liveright).

At a time when primary turnout is already taking a hit from the coronavirus, a new photo ID requirement in Kentucky looms as another deterrent from the polls this year.

Legislation cleared Thursday by the General Assembly would require would-be voters show a driver's license or other government-issued identification with a photo. Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear has signaled he opposes the bill, but his veto would have minimal effect because the House and Senate are solidly Republican and have the power to override him by simple majority.

The beginning of the 2020 presidential election was an unmitigated disaster. Results that should have been reported the night-of in Iowa instead took days as a result of technical issues with an app and inconsistent numbers being reported. Politicos were baffled while accusations of a rigged process arose after the candidate with the most votes didn’t leave with the most delegates.

On December 6, 2019 nonpartisan reformers from across the country descended on Denver, Colorado for the second annual summit of the National Association of Nonpartisan Reformers (NANR).

The summit concluded with an award ceremony recognizing three remarkable individuals for their unparalleled commitment and leadership to advancing revolutionary, nonpartisan change to our current political system.    

An overwhelming majority of voters in St. Louis say they would vote in favor of reform that would allow them to choose as many candidates as they want in city elections. This is according to a recent poll by the Center for Election Science (CES).
