Before Social and Emotional Learning became widely recognized as a critical component of teen lives, Marisa Fogelman was well ahead of the curve. 

Fogelman spent two decades developing a curriculum that integrated SEL with California state standards for traditional subject matter, and put her holistic academic philosophy into practice as co-founder of the School of Universal Learning (SOUL), a charter school for students in grades 6-12. 

SOUL was perhaps the first school in San Diego County to offer such a unique concept.

The San Diego couple are the minds behind Urban Interventions, a grassroots nonprofit that takes the initiative to improve unsightly areas in downtown San Diego. So far, the couple have planted trees, cleaned streets and installed artwork in the neighborhood.

Fifteen years ago, I had the privilege of sitting in the boardroom when San Diego Unified School District’s Board of Education authorized the conversion of Gompers Middle School to an independent charter school.

On a Tuesday afternoon, cars were lined up at Knox Middle School in Lincoln Park. The line extended out of the parking lot and wrapped around 49th Street. Dozens of cars inched forward to collect food for school-aged children as part of San Diego Unified School District’s Curbside Grab and Go meal program, which takes place weekdays at schools throughout the district.  

It's typically a holiday where family and friends gather together to remember the dead. This year, the contagious disease has changed everything. Watch the video to find out how some San Diegans are celebrating Día de Muertos this year.

Earth has experienced numerous changes throughout its planetary history, and variations in our climate are not unusual. But according to NASA and other scientific organizations, the transformation our climate is currently undergoing, borne out by the severity of wildfires which continue to ravage our state, is occurring at an unprecedented rate. It is clear that human industrial activity over the last 200 years has played a significant role in our current situation.
